The sauna is in your room.
Six rooms in the house have their own sauna, a balcony and a direct view of the lake. No opening hours, no shared relaxation area.
No spa in the basement, no booking a slot, no opening hours. Six of our twenty rooms have a sauna of their own.

Four things that matter.
The sauna is in your room
No walk down the corridor in a bathrobe, no booking, no opening hours. You close the door and the space is yours, around the clock, for as long as you stay.
Six rooms in the whole house
Room 101 on the first floor, 201 and 203 on the second, 301, 302 and 304 under the roof. That is all there are, and on winter weekends they go quickly.
A balcony and a view of the lake
All six have their own balcony, a loggia on the top floor, and a direct view of Lake Schliersee and the mountains beyond. Stepping out of the sauna into the cold air is, in winter, the whole point of this category.
Everything is ready for you
Bathrobes and sauna towels are waiting in the room. There is nothing to bring and nothing to arrange.

Wellness without an audience.
What that means here, and what it very deliberately does not.
Most hotels that call themselves spa hotels mean the same thing: an area in the basement that every guest shares. Robe on, down the corridor, towel on the bench, and somewhere there is always someone you do not know. It works, but it is relaxation by timetable.
Here the sauna is in your room. Six rooms in the house have one, and for the length of your stay it is yours alone. No opening hours, no booking, no shared relaxation area. You close the door, and that is it.
Each of these rooms has its own balcony and a direct view of Lake Schliersee and the mountains beyond. In winter that is exactly why people book them: out of the sauna into the cold air, with the lake in front of you. No shared spa can recreate that.
We should also say what there is not. There is no pool, no massages and no treatments. For the afternoon there is the newly renovated Kaminstube: when there is no event on, it is open to our hotel guests during the day, with four comfortable armchairs right by the fireplace, games and books, and tea and small snacks in the afternoon, free for hotel guests. If you are looking for a full spa, a larger resort will suit you better, and that is perfectly fine. We are a boutique hotel with twenty rooms, not a resort.
The reason is not cost-cutting but the building. The Terofal has stood in the middle of the village for more than five hundred years and is a listed building. When it was renovated in 2025, the question was never whether to offer wellness, but where. You cannot build a spa basement into a house of this age. So the sauna moved to where the space was: into the largest rooms, under the roof, looking out over the lake.
In practice: the sauna takes a good half hour to heat up, so it is best to switch it on before you take a shower. Bathrobes and sauna towels are waiting in the room. You have between thirty and forty square metres, and the sofa bed sleeps two more if needed.
It is most worthwhile between October and March. These are the months when dusk falls at half past four, mist lies on the lake and the village is quiet. That is when a sauna of your own carries the evening. In high summer the difference from the other categories is smaller, because you spend most of the day outdoors anyway.
And if you do want to leave your room: during the day the Kaminstube has armchairs by the fire, and in the evening it is reserved primarily for our hotel guests to dine, a space of their own, so you do not have to sit in the public restaurant. The bar stays open until around midnight where possible, and the lake is four minutes away on foot. You never need the car for a quiet evening.

Three kinds of wellness.
Anyone looking for wellness at Schliersee means one of three things. For two of them, we are not the answer.
An afternoon in the warm
For that, the village has the Vitalwelt, a public indoor pool with sauna, five minutes on foot from the station and right next to the boat landing. You pay at the door, stay a few hours and leave. If you are not staying with us, or simply want to get through a rainy afternoon, that is the place to go, not us.
A resort with a full spa
Pools, treatments, massages and somewhere to spend the whole day: you will find those around Tegernsee and in the larger hotels in the region. Not here. We are a boutique hotel with twenty rooms in a listed building, and there is no room for a spa basement. If that is what you are after, you should book elsewhere.
Peace without an audience
No opening hours, no walk down the corridor in a robe, no one on the bench next to you. Six of our twenty rooms have their own sauna, plus a balcony and a direct view of the lake. For the length of your stay it is yours alone. This is the only one of the three where we are the answer.

Or perhaps Deluxe?
The Deluxe has the same direct lake view and the same balcony, with two separate rooms instead of the sauna. If you would not use the sauna, it is the better choice, especially for families.

Is the Terofal a spa hotel?
Not in the usual sense. There is no shared spa, no pool and no treatments. What there is: six rooms with their own sauna, a balcony and a direct lake view. If you are looking for a spa with massages and treatments, a larger resort will suit you better. If you are looking for peace and quiet without an audience, you have come to the right place.
Why is there no shared spa?
Because there is no room for one, and for a good reason. The house has stood in the middle of the village for more than five hundred years and is a listed building. You cannot dig a spa basement into a house like that. So during the 2025 renovation the sauna moved to where the space was: into the largest rooms under the roof, looking out over the lake. Necessity turned into the better idea.
What kind of sauna is in the room?
A Finnish sauna built from glass and wood, right in the room, for two people. It is not an infrared cabin. You set the temperature and duration yourself; if you prefer it gentler, use it like a soft sauna at a lower heat. It takes a good half hour to heat up, so it is best to switch it on before you take a shower. Towels and bathrobes are provided.
Do I need to book a time slot?
No. That is the whole point. The sauna is yours alone for the length of your stay. Use it at four after a hike, at six before dinner, or at eleven at night when the restaurant has long closed.
When is a Wellness room most worthwhile?
Between October and March. When dusk falls at half past four and mist settles on the lake, a sauna of your own with that view carries the evening better than any list of day trips. In high summer the difference from the other categories is smaller, because you spend most of the day outdoors anyway.
How much is a Wellness room?
From €260 a night. The Deluxe room starts at €235 and has the same direct lake view and the same balcony, with two separate rooms instead of the sauna. So the choice comes down to whether you would rather have your own sauna or a second room.
How big are the rooms?
Between thirty and forty square metres, depending on the room. Because the house has grown over centuries, the rooms follow the old beams. Sloping ceilings, alcoves and varying ceiling heights are part of it, and no two rooms are alike. On the room page you will find a floor plan for each one.
Is there a spa hotel at Schliersee?
It depends on what you mean. A resort with pools, treatments and massages does not exist at Schliersee; for that, people tend to go to Tegernsee. For an afternoon in the warm, the village has the Vitalwelt, a public indoor pool with sauna. And if you mean a sauna without an audience: at the Terofal, six of the twenty rooms have their own sauna in the room, with a balcony and a direct lake view, no opening hours and no booking.
Which hotel at Schliersee has a sauna in the room?
The Terofal on Xaver-Terofal-Platz. Six of its twenty rooms have their own glass and wood sauna right in the room: 101 on the first floor, 201 and 203 on the second, and 301, 302 and 304 under the roof. All six also have a balcony and a direct view of Lake Schliersee. They start at €260 a night.
Is there anything else in the house to help you unwind?
The house itself. During the day, the newly renovated Kaminstube, when there is no event on: four comfortable armchairs right by the fireplace, games and books, tea and small snacks in the afternoon, free for hotel guests. In the evening, a restaurant, so you do not have to go out, a bar that closes around midnight where possible, out of consideration for our hotel guests, and a beer garden under an old chestnut tree. And the lake, four minutes away on foot, with a 7.4-kilometre path around it and no motorboats.
