Where is Schliersee?
Fifty kilometres south-east of Munich, between the Tegernsee and the Inn valley.
Schliersee lies about fifty kilometres south-east of Munich, between the Tegernsee valley and the Inn valley, in the Bavarian Prealps and not far from the Austrian border. The main village sits on the north-east shore of the lake at 777 metres, in the district of Miesbach in Upper Bavaria.
The municipality is bigger than the village suggests. It includes Neuhaus and Fischhausen south of the lake and the village of Spitzingsee at 1,090 metres. Its neighbours are Rottach-Egern, Tegernsee and Gmund to the west, Hausham to the north, Fischbachau and Bayrischzell to the east, and to the south Schliersee borders the Tyrolean municipality of Thiersee in Austria.
In practice that means you can head off in several directions from here in a short time, and you do not always need a car to do it.

Munich to Schliersee by train
Direct from München Hauptbahnhof, once or twice an hour from 6 am to midnight.
The most relaxed way to arrive is by train. From München Hauptbahnhof, Munich’s main station, the journey to Schliersee takes about fifty minutes without changing. Trains run every hour or every half hour between 6 am and midnight, operated by the Bayerische Regiobahn (BRB). The line is part of the Munich transport network, so regional tickets and the Deutschlandticket are valid.
From Schliersee station it is a seven-minute walk along the Lautererstraße through the village to us on the Xaver-Terofal-Platz, and another four minutes from there to the water. Come by train and you are standing by the lake eleven minutes after getting off.
Further south is the Fischhausen-Neuhaus stop on the west shore, open since 1911. Several climbs south start from there. If you want to hike, stay on for one more stop.
If you have a lot of luggage or need help, give us a quick call and we will find a solution.
Munich to Schliersee by car
A8 to Weyarn or Irschenberg, then about twenty minutes either way.
By car, take the A8 motorway. From Munich drive to the Weyarn exit; from there it is about twenty minutes. Coming from Salzburg, take the Irschenberg exit, also about twenty minutes. The last stretch runs along the B307 main road, which follows the east shore of the lake.
Parking at the house is free, subject to availability. There is a charging point for electric cars at the hotel, at a flat rate of 25 euros. The Seeheimat apartments have no charging point, but each apartment has its own marked parking space.
A word about addresses, because it occasionally causes confusion. The hotel, restaurant and bar are at Xaver-Terofal-Platz 2; reception is there and that is where you check in. The hall for celebrations is next door at Xaver-Terofal-Platz 1. The Seeheimat apartments are at Seestraße 14, less than two hundred metres away, right on the lake.
Parking in Schliersee: the truth
On fine weekends the car parks by the lake fill early. That is not a rumour.
There are car parks on the edge of the village, in the centre, at the station and at the Vitalwelt pool. On ordinary days parking is not an issue. On fine summer weekends it is, from late morning onwards.
The reason is simple: Schliersee is less than an hour from Munich, and on a hot Saturday half of Munich has the same idea. Even the boat operator advises on its own website to arrive early in perfect weather or to take the train instead.
We say so just as plainly, even though as a house with its own parking it need not concern us: if you are coming for the day on a fine weekend, the train is quicker. You avoid the search for a space and the drive home in the return traffic on the A8.
If you stay the night with us, the problem does not arise. Parking at the house is free, and on most days of the week that follows you will not need the car anyway.
On a hot Saturday half of Munich has the same idea. Then the train is quicker than the car.

Getting around without a car
Buses stop outside the door, the ski bus runs hourly, free with the guest card.
Once here, you will hardly need a car. Several bus routes stop right outside the door. The ski bus to the Spitzingsee runs hourly from the Seehotel Schlierseer Hof stop and is free with the guest card. The Gästekarte, or guest card, comes with every overnight stay: you get it from us at reception, and it doubles as a free ticket on local buses and regional trains.
The lake walk starts a few minutes from the house. Spend a week here and you can hike, swim, eat out and go skiing without driving once. In this part of the world that is not a given.
Rooms are ready from 3 pm, Seeheimat apartments from 3.30 pm. Reception is staffed daily from 7.30 am to 8 pm, and check-in runs until 9 pm. If you arrive later, please let us know in advance and we will leave a door code and key for you.
