The beer garden in front of the house with guests under parasols

The beer garden

Right in front of the house, in the shade of an old chestnut tree. Two hundred seats with table service, Hopf and Tegernseer on tap, and the full kitchen of the house behind you.

Under the chestnut.

200seats, every one with table service

2beers on tap from the neighbourhood: Hopf and Tegernseer

4minutes’ walk to the water

1menu for every area, inside and out

The beer garden is right in front of the house on Xaver-Terofal-Platz. There is nothing to look for: it is the square you arrive on. An old chestnut tree gives the shade, and in high summer that is the real luxury: you sit in the green, not in the blazing sun.

Two beers from the neighbourhood are on tap. Hopf wheat beer is brewed in Miesbach, less than ten kilometres away, and Tegernseer at the Brauhaus Tegernsee on the other side of the mountain. There are also aperitifs, wines and soft drinks.

The beer garden has two hundred seats, and every one has table service. There is no self-service here: you stay seated and the beer comes to you. The same menu applies as in the Stuben: from a Brotzeit, the Bavarian cold platter, with freshly made Obazda cheese spread, to char from the lake, plus the specials board, which changes almost every day.

A beer garden lives from people simply turning up. We only take bookings inside and on the terrace; outside, you sit wherever there is room. On warm weekends that can mean a short wait. In return you sit in the middle of the village, on a square that everyone in Schliersee has crossed for centuries on the way to somewhere.

A few times a year there is a festival right in front of the house, organised by the village clubs: the anniversary days of the costume society and the Gebirgsschützen, the traditional mountain riflemen; the Alt-Schlierseer Kirchtag on the first Sunday in August; the Leonhardifahrt, a horse-drawn procession; the Kulturherbst, an autumn of culture with many events; and every four years the maypole festival, when a new maypole goes up. In good weather the party is in the beer garden, in bad weather in the Bauerntheater next door. Then it is packed, and that is part of it.

On the square, not on the shore.

There are several beer gardens at Schliersee. What makes this one different, and when another is the better choice.

If you want to sit outside at Schliersee, you have a choice between two kinds of place. One is by the water, with the lake in front of you and the lakeside road behind. The other is in the village. We belong to the second.

The beer garden is on Xaver-Terofal-Platz, under an old chestnut tree and next to the maypole. From here it is four minutes’ walk to the water. If you really want to sit with a view of the lake, one of the places on the shore will suit you better, and we would rather tell you so ourselves than have you find out when you get here.

What you get instead: you sit in the village centre, on the square everyone crosses anyway, with the church tower above the rooftops. You have shade while others sit in the sun. And you have the full kitchen of the house two doors away when a Brotzeit is not enough.

Where to sit, and when

In the beer garden, under the chestnut tree

Shade all afternoon, right on Xaver-Terofal-Platz by the maypole. You sit in the middle of the village and watch the world go by. For a hot July afternoon with a Brotzeit, this is the spot. In bad weather it stays closed.

On the terrace, in the sun

The terrace is sunny and faces the mountains. The full menu is served here, as everywhere in the house. If you come to eat and want to sit outside, this is the place.

In the Stuben, when it turns cold

Warm wood, low ceilings, a house more than five hundred years old, and you can tell. From October to April this is the room where you stay on long after the plates have gone.

In the Jägerstube, with your dog

Dogs are welcome in the Stuben and in the beer garden. In the Jägerstube you can also have breakfast with your dog, served at the table rather than at the buffet.

At the bar, when it gets late

The kitchen closes at 9 pm, the bar does not. It stays open longer, until around midnight out of consideration for our hotel guests. In the village that is not a given: if you want a drink after ten, there is little choice.

And where not with us

You will not sit right on the water here. The square is four minutes’ walk from the shore; the house stands in the village centre, not on the lakeside road. If you really want to sit with your feet almost in the lake, one of the places on the shore will suit you better. If you want the village, you are in the right place.

From the neighbourhood.

Two beers on tap, three distilleries close by. All from the district or from the village itself.

Hopf wheat beer from Miesbach and Tegernseer from the Brauhaus Tegernsee. There are also aperitifs, wines and soft drinks.

What can I eat in the beer garden?

The same as inside. One menu covers every area, from a Brotzeit with freshly made Obazda and pretzels to roast pork, schnitzel and char from the lake. On top of that there is a specials board with seasonal dishes that changes almost every day.

            Is the beer garden self-service?

No. All 200 seats have table service. You sit down and we come to you.

Which is the nicest beer garden at Schliersee?

That depends on what you are after. If you want your feet almost in the water, go to one of the places on the shore. If you want a proper village inn beer garden, sit with us: 200 seats under an old chestnut tree in the middle of the village, next to the maypole and the Bauerntheater, the farmers’ theatre from 1892, all with table service, Hopf and Tegernseer on tap and the full Xaver kitchen behind you. The lake is four minutes’ walk away.

Are dogs allowed in the beer garden?

Yes, dogs are welcome in the beer garden and in the Stuben. We are glad to put down a water bowl. We do not have dog food, so it is best to bring your own.

Where exactly is the beer garden?

Right in front of the house on Xaver-Terofal-Platz, in the shade of an old chestnut tree. There is nothing to look for: it is the square you arrive on.
